Aesthetics Unit
Aims and Approach:
The Aesthetics department aims to ensure students have the joy in learning art and music so that they can appreciate the arts in their lives and contribute to society through various art forms. We also endeavour to promote the spirit of experiential learning and a thinking and creative culture.
The student-centric approach to the teaching and learning of art and music is informed by:
- inquiry-based learning
- collaborative learning
- experiential learning
Key Programmes
External Engagements
Selected students participate in external competitions, performances and exhibitions such as the SYF Youth Station Songwriting Experience, N5 Cluster Art Exhibition, workshops as well as a music performance at Woodlands Regional Library. These opportunities allow them to apply their knowledge and skills.
Nutrition and Food Science Unit
Aims and Approach:
The Nutrition and Food Science (NFS) Unit aims to nurture concerned citizens who take an active role in bettering the lives of themselves as well as those around them through nutrition, food literacy and food science.
The approach to the teaching and learning of Nutrition and Food Science involves inquiry-based learning. Students are tasked with real-world problems to investigate. They work in teams to plan, craft and create scientifically-informed diets for healthier lives.
Lower Secondary
The elective project for lower secondary includes an experiential learning task that provides students the opportunity to be food nutritionists to plan a proper diet for a fictitious character. Through this task, they learn to investigate claims, gather information, identify appropriate food choices, and apply the principles of culinary science creatively in food preparation and cooking. They also hone their teamwork and collaboration skills through this group task.
Upper Secondary
Students engage in coursework where they have the opportunities to apply scientific principles during food preparation and cooking. They also learn to appreciate the importance of using a variety of food commodities in food management and the issues of food security, including food safety and sustainable food consumption. They extend the learnt knowledge towards planning a food investigation, preparing, cooking and presenting dishes in a variety of contexts demonstrating a number of process skills in coursework.
